Customer Safety Guide: Approaching Moving Machinery

CUSTOMERS Do’s and Don’ts

DO

Do get the operator’s attention: Before approaching, make sure the operator sees you and gives a clear signal that it’s safe.
Do wait for equipment to stop: Only approach after the machinery has come to a complete stop and the operator waves you over.
Do stay visible: Approach from the front or where you’re clearly in the operator’s line of sight—never from behind or a blind spot.
Do follow staff instructions: If a team member asks you to wait or stand back, please do so for your own safety
Do wear appropriate footwear: Closed-toe shoes are best if you need to be near the work area.
Do keep children and pets away: For everyone’s safety, please keep kids and pets at a safe distance from all equipment.
Do ask questions: If you’re unsure about where it’s safe to stand or walk, just ask—our team is happy to help!

DON’T

Don’t approach moving equipment: Never walk up to machinery that’s operating or backing up, even if you think the operator sees you.
Don’t enter marked work zones: Please stay outside of cones, barricades, or roped-off areas around equipment.
Don’t distract the operator: Avoid waving, shouting, or making sudden movements that could startle the crew.
Don’t assume you’re seen: Operators have blind spots—don’t rely on them to spot you unless you’ve made clear eye contact and received a signal.
Don’t bring loose items near equipment: Avoid bringing bags, umbrellas, or anything that could blow or fall near moving parts.
Don’t stand under raised loads: Never position yourself under a raised bucket or load, even if it looks secure.
